Off Spin bowling grip

An off break or off spin is a type of delivery in cricket in which the ball moves from the off side to leg side after bouncing from the pitch (As far as Right-arm bowler is considered).

An off spin can be bowled by holding the ball in the palm of the hand with the seam running across the fingers as shown in the picture.At the point of releasing the ball,the fingers should roll down the right side of the ball (As far as right-arm bowler is concerned) which helps the ball to generate a clock-wise spin (as seen from behind).

If a left-arm bowler bowls an off break delivery it is called as left-arm orthodox delivery.Popular off break bowlers are Muttiah Muralidaran,Saqlain Mushtaq and Harbhajan Singh.

Doosra is the bowling variation of the off-spinner.This type of delivery was popularised by the pakistani bowler Saqlain Mushtaq.The term “doosra” is an hindi word which means the “other one”.

Other notable Doosra bowlers are Muttiah Muralitharan,Ajantha Mendis,Johan Botha,Harbhajan Singh,Shoaib Malik and Saeed Ajmal.

History of Doosra

It is said that Saqlain Mushtaq invented the delivery.The then wicket keeper of Pakistan Moin Khan frequently shouted the word “Doosra” to Saqlain Mushtaq as a sign to bowl that kind of delivery.And in no time it became a delivery in the Off Spinner’s armoury.

Doosra Defined

Simply,we can define a Doosra as the Off-Spinner’s version of Googly.It is bowled with the same action as that of the Off Spinner but the ball turns from leg side to off side or sometimes it goes straight without any spin which surprises the batsman.

The bowler delivers the ball with the same finger action as that of the normal off break but cocks the wrist so that the back side of the hand faces the batsman.This generates the spin of the ball in the other direction that is from legside to off side.

This is also possible for a left-arm orthodox bowler to bowl the doosra.But in this case the ball would tun from the off side to the leg side.Rangana Herath of Sri Lanka and Monty Panesar of England is an example for this.

Round arm bowling at the starting of 80s

In cricket,round arm bowling was introduced early in the 19th century.However it was found only rare nowadays after the legalisation of overarm bowling.It was said that Tom Walker of England was the first to introduce this kind of bowling.Walker bowled the deliveries with his arm away from the body which helped him a lot to generate extra pace and variations in the deliveries.

John Willes is very keen to bowl deliveries in the round-arm action but the, then stringent cricket laws prevented him from bowling in round-arm action.Cricket laws in the year 1816 says that the ball should be delivered under the elbow.The bowler must not throw the ball at the time of delivering the ball and no part of the hand should be above the elbow.If any one who bowls so,the umpire has the right to call “no ball”.These strong rules made the then cricketers very difficult to bowl in the round-arm action and most of them stuck to the conventional under-arm bowling.

In 1828 MCC(Marylebone Cricket Club) modified the rule 10 which permits the bowlers to raise the hand as high as the elbow as they wish.In 1835 MCC finally amended the Laws of Cricket to make the round arm bowling legal which says that the hand should not be above the shoulders and if so the umpire can call “No Ball”.The law was again reinforced in 1845 by removing benefit of the doubt from the bowler in the matter of his hand’s height when delivering the ball.

Broadbridge,Alfred Mynn,John Jackson and W G Grace .The modern common type of bowling is overarm bowling.In the modern game,one of the most successful round arm bowler is Sri Lanka’s Lasith Malinga.This has earned him the name “Slinger Malinga”

An arm ball is a type of delivery in cricket.It is a variation delivery bowled by an off spinner or left arm Orthodox bowler.It is equivalent to wrist spinner’s slider or zooter.

The trajectory of the ball will be along the direction of the arm during delivering the ball which means there will be only little spin or no spin on the ball.Sometimes the slow bowlers bowls the ball with the seam upright which sometimes produce inswing or outswing on the delivery.

Sanath Jayasuriya, Saqlain Mushtaq, Daniel Vettori, Mohammad Rafique and Maninder Singh use the arm ball to good effect.Suleimann Benn of West Indies is also a very good arm bowler.

Yorker in cricket is the delivery where the cricket ball pitches on or near the batsman’s popping crease.It is very difficult for the batsman to play the delivery, moreover, it is very difficult to bowl the delivery with extreme perfection which needs constant practise.

Yorkers are usually bowled by fast bowlers.Perfect yorkers will get a batsman out by bowled or LBW (Leg Before Wicket).If a batsman blocks such a ball, it is referred to as “dug out”.Inswinging yorkers or reverse swinging yorkers are even dangerous for the batsman to play.Inswinging or reverse swinging grip are mostly used to produce perfect yorkers.

Batsman find inswinging deliveries very hard to defend and score runs and such deliveries are colloquially called as sandshoe crusher, toe crusher or nail breaker.The Pakistani bowling legends Waqar Younis and Wasim Akram are expert in this kind of bowling.Darren Gough of England also find to bowl this kind of deliveries.Brett Lee of Australia and Shoaib Akhtar of Pakistan bowls yorkers along with their deadly speed.Dale Steyn of South Africa is the another bowler who bowls out-swinging yorkers.

How to ball a Yorker?

A yorker is usually bowled very late in the action with the hand almost pointing directly vertical.This will give the bowler more pace and later delivering the ball will deceive the batsman in flight

Faster ball is usually bowled by slow or spin bowlers in order to surprise the batsman by varying the pace.

Spinners like Shahid Afridi and Anil Kumble are well versed in bowling fast deliveries.Usually spinners use the technique of a flipper to bowl a fast delivery.This can also be achieved by increasing the speed of bowling action.But to disguise better,flipper is the best.

Former captain and fast bowler of Pakistan, Imran Khan use this method of faster bowling in which he bowls even faster than his usual fast delivery.

A slower ball is usually bowled by a fast bowler in order to surprise the batsman with the difference in pace.Due to this slow delivery from a fast bowler the batsman will play his shot early which he will completely miss the ball or hits the ball high in the air which will offer an easy catch for the fieldsman.

This slow ball bowling technique was probably introduced by Franklyn Stephenson.An effective slow ball will end up in taking wickets and it also helps to slow down the scoring rate.

Different tricks to bowl a slow ball in cricket

Bowling from the back of the hand, effectively a fast googly.The latest example for a bowler who bowls slow ball in this fashion is Usuru Udana
Bowling with the fingers (middle and index fingers) placing apart on either side of the seam of the ball.The delivery is bowled full length.When bowled correctly the delivery will appear to be a full toss for the batsman but suddenly it drops.Sri Lankan cricketer Dilhara Fernando is an example who bowls this kind of delivery.

Holding the ball deeper in the fingers:-Usually fast bowlers delivers the ball from the fingertips.Holding the ball deeper within the fingers slows the release of the ball.Brett Lee of Australia is an expert in this method.

Indipper bowling technique in cricket

Indipper is a bowling technique in cricket, which is the effect of two elements of the dipper,namely, the yorker and the inswinger.The delivery is bowled on or near batsman’s toes, with the cricket ball inswinging and dipping simultaneously into the batsman.

Indippers are actually one of the most difficult deliveries to bowl since sometimes indippers may end up in juicy full-tosses in which the batsman may take advantage of.With this kind of delivery the batsman could be out by Leg Before wicket (LBW) or bowled.The other variation of this delivery is Outdipper which is more lethal than indipper.

Indipper can also told in other way as the combination of reverse swing and Yorker.This was best bowled to perfection by the Pakistan cricket legends Waqar Younis and Wasim Akram.Indipper is actually different from inswinger since this delivery is bowled without a top spin or a slight negative top spin which means the ball spins forward at the top.For bowling a dipper the bowler has to slide his fingers rather than pushing the ball.

The grip to bowl an indipper delivery varies from different bowlers because some bowlers will grip the ball across the seam.This will help the bowler to generate a slight negative top spin.But this will sometimes help the batsman to understand about the delivery and adjust himself to face the delivery.Some bowlers use the grip of a reverse swing since this kind of deliveries is more bowled during the end of the innings (In the case of ODI).Wasim Akram used the grip of a Leg-cutter since this gives the batsman only a less chance to know about the delivery.

The negative top spin is the main cause to descend the ball much earlier and faster and the another effect is that it skids along the pitch when bowled in other lengths which makes the batsman difficult to play the ball.

A bouncer or bumper is a type of delivery in cricket usually bowled by a fast bowler.It is t is pitched short on the surface so that it bounces on the pitch well short of the batsman and rears up to chest or head height (sometimes even higher) as it reaches the batsman.

Bouncers unlike Beamers are not illegal in cricket and is a tactically effective part of the game.Some batsmen were vulnerable with this kind of deliveries and can be easily got out, like the bodyline deliveries for Don Bradman.The batsman can play either defensive or attacking shots for a bouncer.sometimes the batsman also leave the ball to the wicket keeper without playing any shot.A good batsman can hook or pull a bouncer effectively to clear the boundary.

There is an unspoken agreement that fast bowlers will not bowl bouncers at each other.It is also been said that the breaking of this agreement is called as “bouncer wars”.In 1954-55 at Sydney the England fast bowler Frank Tyson bowled bouncers at the Australian Ray Lindwall, who returned the favour by hospitalising Tyson with with one of his own. A very, very angry Tyson returned with a large lump on his head and took 6-85 to give England a 38 run victory.
