Most of us are curious about how Cricket Balls are being made. Before going directly to the manufacturing process let’s understand some basics.

The cricket ball is made up of two main layers. The inner cork and the outer leather covering. The inner cork is made up of Oak Wood and as an outer layer it is covered with strips of bronzed leather.

Dimensions of Cricket ball

Diameter : 224 & 229 Millimeters approx
Weight : 155.9 & 163.0 Grams approx

Cricket Ball Colors

Cricket balls usually come in two different colors, Red and White. Traditionally the color of the ball is Red and is used for Test matches which happens during the day time. However due to enhanced visibility white balls are used in the flood light conditions matches. Cricket balls are designed in such a way that one ball can be used for 80 overs / 5 hours of bowling.

Cricket Ball Manufactures

Most of the balls are manufactured in cottage industries in Asia. Kookaburra, Gray-Nicolls and Slazenge are the top distributors of cricket balls. Cricket balls can be either hand made or Machines made.

Here are some pictures of cricket ball being manufactured in cottage industries.

A product of the leverage appliances called the “Leverage Ultimate” claims the world’s fastest bowling machine which can bowl a ball with a maximum speed of 230kph.

This bowling machine has got a lot of specialties such as to bowl fast, swing, spin etc.It can also spin the ball in both the ways.It can bowl accurately even at the higher speeds of 170kph.The other important advantage of this machine is that it can be easily operated.

Hot Spot technology is an infra red imaging system used in cricket in order to know precisely whether the ball hits the bat or pad of the batsman. This technology sometimes uses in cricket for adjudication.

The mechanism of hot spot is that it uses 2 infra red cameras which are placed at either end of the ground. These infra red cameras sense and measure heat generated by a collision, for instance ball on pad, ball on bat, ball on ground or glove.Using a subtraction technique a series of black and white negative frames are generated into a computer, perfectly localising the ball’s point of contact.

Followed by the declaration of ICC,the hot spot technology has been used as a part of its ongoing technology trial in the 2nd and 3rd tests in South Africa recently.

A Cricket Bowling Machine is a Cricket Equipment which enables a batsman to practise (Normally in the nets). The bowling machine can be able to bowl a useful range of deliveries. There are three types of Bowling Machines namely Mechanical,Pneumatic and programmable bowling machines.

Mechanical Bowling Machine
The main mechanism of this machine comprises of 2 heavy wheels which has a diameter of about 30-50cm in diameter shod with pneumatic or rubber tyres. Each wheel is driven by its own electric motor and they are separated by only 7 cm.This machine has a ball joint which allows a wide range of movements. The electric motors are typically powered by car battery and there is a controller which helps in the variation of speed of each wheel which in turn helps to bowl a wide range of deliveries.

Pneumatic Bowling Machine
The Space in this machine is a hopper that contains the balls and there is a rotor with a space of 6 balls. There is a trap door through which the rotor passes and by the weight of the ball it falls into a small chamber. There is pump which is used to provide a flow of air into the chamber and the airflow pushes the ball along the chamber to a rubber ring known as “restrictor“.The “restrictor” has a hole in which the diameter is slightly less than a cricket ball which seals the hole.So the air pressure inside the chamber builds up and ultimately pumps the ball out through a nozzle which is released at the height of a bowler’s arm.

Programmable Bowling Machine
This is the most advanced bowling machine which are intended to overcome some of the limitations of the other two bowling machines and also aids to rapidly re-configure themselves to bowl different types of deliveries in quick succession.“Merlyn“ is a programmable bowling machine in which the makers of it claims that this is a machine which helps to bowl any kind of deliveries known to man.The machine also claims that it can bowl shane warne’s magic leg breaks.

A cricket ball has been developed which helps to measure its speed after its delivery, more accurately than the radar guns. There is also a small LCD screen on one side of the cricket ball with which it displays the speed of the ball. With the help of new speedsensor measuring technology inside the ball become possible to get the accurate measurement of the bowling speeds. But this ball cannot be used to play since it gets damaged easily when it strikes hard on the pitch,so this cricket ball can be used on the nets only.It has got a 3 year battery life and costs about $45.

Its important use in the cricket is to analyse the leg before wicket (LBW) decision which is taken by the 1st umpire. It will help to analyse the delivery patterns of the bowlers which also include their line and length, swing of the delivery. This technology also is a great asset for the batsmen which helps them to analyse and study each bowlers very closely.Hawk-eye technology is now in a trial status which means it is now also not perfectly approved by the ICC as a part of adjudication in Cricket. If it is completely approved by the ICC umpires in cricket can depend on this technology for making LBW decisions.
