Flipper is one of the best deliveries in cricket, which is also called as the wicket taking delivery.Flipper delivery is normally bowled by a leg-spinner.

Rather than turning away from the batsman as a leg-spinner or towards the batsman as a off-spinner, the flipper skids through the surface and hurries to the batsman without turning making the batsman quite difficult to play the delivery.

It was invented by the Australian leg-spinner Clarrie Grimmett. He bowls flipper frequently and hence the greatest batsman of all-time Don Bradman once remarked to Grimmett that he must have forgotten how to bowl a leg-break.

Flipper is a specific bowling technique in cricket which is actually squeezed out from the thumb and the first and second fingers. The ball comes out from underneath the hand at the time of  delivery. There must be ample tension in the wrist and fingers to help the backspin or underspin of the ball which is the key to ball a flipper.

While delivering a flipper the ball will float towards the batsman on a length fuller he had first expected, often leaving him caught on the back foot when he wrongly assumes it to be a pullable or a cuttable ball. But the ball hurries to the batsman due to the backspin or underspin making the batsman difficult to play. But flipper may be difficult to deliver on a softer wickets.

Shane Warne and Anil Kumble are the leg-spinners who can bowl flipper very well.Shane Warne’s flipper is like the seam coming down like an inswinger.Flipper is a kind of delivery which is very difficult for the batsman to read perfectly.Sachin Tendulkar is a classical example who can read and play flipper perfectly.
