Left-arm Unorthodox bowling in cricket

by on July 17, 2009

Left-arm unorthodox spin as the name suggests is bowled by a left arm bowler and it is the mirror image of the right-handed leg spin bowler.Spin is generated by the wrist and so the ball turns sharply towards the right-handed batsman.Left -arm unorthodox delivery moves from the off side to the leg side of a right-handed batsman.

Left-arm unorthodox spin is also known as slow left-arm chinaman (SLC)

Left-arm unorthodox grip is exactly that of a Leg-spin grip of a right-arm bowler.

Charlie ‘Buck’ Llewellyn, a South African all-rounder who played at the end of the 19th century is said to have invented this delivery. This kind of bowling is very rare in cricket because of its difficult to bowl and also it is considered to be less dangerous since it moves towards the right-handed batsman rather than away from the batsman.

Bradd Hogg of Australia is the most successful ODI chinaman bowler who took more than 150 ODI wickets.Michael Bevan and Simon Katich are the other Australian chinaman bowlers.Sir Gary Sobers of West Indies also bowled chinaman style of bowling including his other bowling styles such as Left-arm Orthodox and Left-Arm Medium.
