A ceremony in Sydney on Thursday (March 5th) made an opening to the Women’s cricket world cup.This is the first tournament after the merger of ICC and International women’s cricket council (IWCC) in 2005.Apart from the hosts and holders Australia the other teams taking part in the World-Cup are England,India,Pakistan,New Zealand,South Africa,Sri Lanka and West Indies.Cricket Australia chairman and ICC director Jack Clarke launched the tournament saying that the women’s World-Cup will have a positive effect on Australia and also around the world.ICC chief Haroon Lorgat said that this tournament will take the women’s cricket to a new heights.
Haroon Lorgat also thanked commercial partners like Global Partners Reliance Communications Limited,PepsiCo and LG electronics,Emirates Airlines,Reebok and Yahoo.The Local Partners are New South Wales and Daily Telegraph.The Broadcasting Partners are ESPN Star Sports.Women’s World-Cup will start on March 7th (Saturday).The top four teams of this tournament will directly qualify to the 2013 World-Cup event which is to be staged in India.This tournament has been held twice each in India (1978 and 1997),England (1973and 1993) and New Zealand (1982 and 2000).Women’s world-cup also took place once in Australia (1988) and South Africa (2005).Australia won the World-cup five times (Most number of World-Cups) in the years 1978,1982,1988,1997 and 2005 while England has won the event twice in 1973 and 1993 and New Zealand in 2000.
There were impressive commentators for this tourney namely Wasim Akram,Alan Wilkins and Danny Morrison.Commentators also include leading women cricket experts like Debbie Hockley,Melanie Jones and Belina Clarke.The tournament will be played at 6 venues in 16 days.Jhulan Goswami led India is placed at group B along with Sri Lanka,Pakistan and England while Group A includes Australia,New Zealand,South Africa,West Indies.The tournament will be played from March 7-22
